  5.     April is the cruelest month, as French vintners, especially in
  6. Bordeaux, have again learned. Instead of spring showers came the
  7. worst frost in more than 30 years, killing early buds in the
  8. vineyards. First assessments halved production forecasts for the
  9. year -- a loss of almost $690 million. Said Hubert Bouteiller of
  10. the Interprofessional Council for Wines in Bordeaux: "In one
  11. fell swoop, the work of a year's pruning was destroyed."

  13.     But chill winds are not ill winds for all. After three
  14. consecutive good harvests, the market is glutted with French
  15. wine, leaving producers and merchants with huge stocks. Says
  16. Jacques Salle, editor of the Vintage Yearbook: "There's just too
  17. much good wine out there." So are the cries from Bordeaux ones
  18. of anguish or happiness? Says Peter Mayle, a British author and
  19. oenophile: "I think ((French producers)) looked at all their
  20. unsold bottles and thought up this scare so the English would
  21. worry about how little wine they had and would rush out and buy
  22. more." Besides, the vines are expected to produce second and
  23. even third buddings. And frost need not doom a crop to vinegary
  24. sneers. "Remember," says Salle, "1945 and 1961, both frost
  25. years, produced great vintages."
